Balancing Center Aikido was founded in Ithaca, NY by Joe Cummins in 2001 to practice an alternative form of Aikido under the guidance of Henry Kono of Toronto. Henry is the only Canadian to have trained with the Founder.
Joe's Aikido study began in 1990. At that time he was working at a rehabilitation center for teenagers who often used violence to deal with conflict. His Aikido practice was enhanced by the daily practice the teenagers provided him. Joe noticed that over time his attitude towards people and situations began to change. He found himself listening more than talking, watching more than demonstrating, and allowing more than controlling. This work continues with his practice.

"A mind to serve for the peace of all human beings in the world is needed in Aikido, and
not the mind of one who wishes to be strong or who practices only to defeat an opponent."
-O’sensei (1883-1969)
